Tengku Zafrul Aziz first developed an interest in politics in the late 1990s, although his involvement became more active following his appointment to the Cabinet in 2020. Beginning his political journey with the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), he held several key positions, including Supreme Council Member, Treasurer of Barisan Nasional Selangor, Treasurer of UMNO Selangor, and Chief of the Kota Raja UMNO Division. Despite narrowly losing the 2022 General Election in Kuala Selangor by approximately one per cent of the vote, he remained actively engaged in national politics. In 2025, he decided to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), viewing the party as more closely aligned with his political aspirations and vision. His membership application was officially accepted on 8 August 2025, after which he joined the Ampang branch, before being appointed as an Ex-Officio Member of PKR’s Political Bureau by the party’s Central Leadership Council (MPP) in January 2026. The appointment further strengthened his position as one of the key figures within the Pakatan Harapan coalition and marked a significant new chapter in his political journey.
