As of June 2022, Malaysia's federal government debt stood at RM1.045 trillion, or 63.8% of GDP. Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz stated that RM43.1 billion, or 18.4% of total revenue, was allocated for debt service charges in 2022. He assured that interest payments would be made on schedule, in line with the Federal Constitution's prioritisation of debt charges. Despite challenges, the government remains disciplined in managing its fiscal position and has consistently met its debt obligations.
