The Malaysian government must repay over RM13 billion of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) debt by 2023, using public funds for direct assistance and through the asset recovery fund. Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz stated that as of February 28, the total debt commitment amounts to RM38.8 billion. The government has already paid RM13.31 billion but still needs RM17 billion to cover the remaining principal and interest through 2039. Zafrul assured that the government will meet its debt obligations to avoid default and continue efforts to recover misappropriated funds.
